Mooloolaba - Sunshine Coast Holiday Icon

It is not hard to see why Mooloolaba Beach has been named in Trip Advisor’s Top 10 Beaches in Australia for the last 2 years running.

The pristine, north facing beach provides protected swimming conditions year-round. Running between Pt Cartwright to the south and Alexander Headland to the north, this idyllic strip of white sand and crystal-clear blue water hems a thriving dining, shopping and accommodation precinct.

Add access to a range of exciting leisure pursuits, national and international events, Sea Life Aquarium and a renowned fresh seafood precinct and it becomes obvious that Mooloolaba Beach deserves its iconic reputation.

Mooloolaba Experiences

The Beach

As with any great coastal destination, you can choose to do as much or as little as you like when holidaying at Mooloolaba. If lying back and relaxing on a beautiful beach with powder white sand, swimming in a protected bay with a gentle beach break, taking early morning or evening walks along it, or taking in the view from adjacent parklands or your accommodation sounds appealing, then Mooloolaba Beach is the place to go.  If a little more action sounds appealing, surfing, SUP, fishing, kayaking, boat cruises, jet boat rides, scuba diving and swimming with migrating whales are all available options.

Visitors and locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options at Mooloolaba. With no doubt the best view in town, the Mooloolaba Surf Club has all day dining in its Boathouse Restaurant. Augello's Ristorante & Pizzaria was awarded 2017's 'World's Best Pizza', while the Spice Bar serves stunning modern Asian cuisine in an equally stunning location.  There is a plethora of local cafes and coffee shops, perfect for breakfast, lunch or just a coffee. The Esplanade location of many of these allow you to take in the water views while relaxing over your latte.

The Mooloolaba shopping precinct has a treasure trove of boutique shops to explore. From clothes to fine jewellery, home and gift wares or books, there is something for all tastes and budgets. Nearby Maroochydore has the Sunshine Coast’s largest shopping centre, Sunshine Plaza. It is Australia’s only shopping centre built over and around a natural waterway.  Department stores, over 220 speciality stores, cinemas and an array of eateries can make this a one-stop shopping destination.

Parkyn Parade Seafood Precinct

Mooloolaba prawns are famous for good reason. And what better place to try them than directly from the seafood markets at Parkyn Parade! Local fishing and prawn trawlers are unloading their catches daily so freshness and quality is assured.

Sea Life Sunshine Coast

Previously known as Underwater World, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast aquarium is an iconic part of the Sunshine Coast. With 11 themed zones, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore life under the sea, including the Ocean Tunnel, Tidal Touch Pools, Seahorse Sanctuary and Lower Seal Island. You can even swim with the seals if you really want to get up and personal!

Swimming with the Whales

Yes, you read that correctly! Sunreef Mooloolaba offer the opportunity to swim with magnificent humpback whales during their annual migration from mid-June to early November. Once a whale is sighted, the boat is put into neutral 100m or more away from the whale, and if the conditions are determined as safe by the trained crew, the boat will be turned off and swimmers will be allowed into the water holding on to the floating line attached to the boat. Then it’s all up to the whale – it is a natural experience and it is 100% on the whale’s own terms. Whales are known as curious creatures so they may come over towards you or they may just swim past or away. Either way it’s an experience you will never forget.

Whale Watching

If swimming with them sounds a little too close for your liking, many whale watching cruises, including Australia Zoo owned Whale One , operate out of Mooloolaba Wharf.  They offer your money back or a free ticket to cruise again if whales are not sighted.

Cruising or Fishing

A perfect way to experience the open water is from one of the many coastal cruise boats such as  Coastal Cruises Mooloolaba, operating out of Mooloolaba Wharf. Enjoy a succulent seafood lunch or sip on a cocktail at sunset.

Keen fishermen will find a variety of fishing charters to choose from. Get that photo you’ve been wanting of the one that didn’t get away!

Scuba Diving

The ex-HMAS Brisbane, a former Royal Australian Navy warship now in 28m of water, is a growing artificial reef and a world-class dive site that is known as one of Australia's premier wreck dive destinations. Situated about 9km offshore from Mooloolaba, this is a restricted dive site which requires a permit to enter.

Each March, the Mooloolaba Triathlon puts Mooloolaba on the international sporting radar.  The three-day multi-sports event attracts professional athletes through to family teams and turns the area into a sea of fit, healthy bodies. The Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Running Festival held in August, is one of the most-loved running festivals in Australia. This is no surprise given the magnificent ocean vistas the run takes in following the stunning coastline of Alexandra Headlands. Christmas sees the arrival of Mooloolaba Yacht Club’s Christmas Boat Parade. If Christmas lights on water sounds appealing, you will love this beautiful night time display.

Whether you are a local or tourist, Mooloolaba offers the perfect mix of options – relaxed or exhilarating, busy or quiet, fine dining or fish and chips on the beach…. And all on or near the year-round picture- perfect Mooloolaba Beach. Make sure you visit soon!
